Beg God for the gift to love one another. Love all people, even your enemies, not because they are your brothers and sisters, but that they might become such. Love them in order that you may be at all times on fire with love, whether toward those who have become your brothers and sisters or toward your enemies, so that by being beloved, they may become your brothers and sisters. --St. Augustine, Sermon on 1 John 10: 7
Home > Justice & Peace
Jesus, as he began his public ministry, went to the synagogue of Nazareth, his home town. There he read this passage from Scripture to the assembled people:
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring the Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to those who are captive, and recovery of sight to those who are blind, to let those who are oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.
Jesus then began to speak to the people, saying
Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing. -- see Luke 4: 16 - 21
From the beginning Jesus was concerned with issues of justice and those in need. Saint Augustine wrote and preached on the promotion of justice, peace, unity, harmony and reconciliation.
As followers of Jesus Christ and of Augustine, Augustinian Friars--and, indeed, all Christians--are called to do no less. We offer for your reflection the following items on justice and peace.
