Rev. Lawrence P. Dore, O.S.A. (1940-1980)

Rev. Lawrence P. Dore, O.S.A. entered eternal life on February 14, 1980.

Lawrence Patrick Dore was born on May 29, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois to James and Alice (Lindstrom) Dore. He was baptized on June 23, 1940 at Our Lady of Solace Catholic Church, Chicago.

Lawrence received his elementary education at Our Lady of Solace School and St. Rita School, both in Chicago. He attended St. Rita High School, Chicago, for one year and completed his secondary education at Augustinian Academy, receiving his diploma in 1958.

He was received into the Augustinian Novitiate on September 4, 1958. He professed simple (temporary) vows in the Order of St. Augustine on September 5, 1959 and solemn (permanent) vows on September 5, 1962. He earned a B.A. in Philosophy from Tolentine College, Olympia Fields, Illinois, in 1963. He pursued theological studies at Tolentine College from 1963 to 1967. He was ordained a priest on November 21, 1966. He earned an M.A. in History from DePaul University, Chicago, in 1969. He did further studies at Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan.

Father Dore served as teacher, chaplain and Director of Activities at Austin Catholic High School, Detroit, from 1967 to 1970. He served as Master of Theologians at Mendel Catholic High School, Chicago, in 1970 and 1971. He was instrumental in the opening of St. John Stone Friary, Chicago, as a residence for Augustinian seminarians during their theological studies.

In 1971, he returned to Austin Catholic High School, Detroit, and resumed his former duties as teacher, chaplain and Director of Activities. He served as teacher and Prior (local superior) at Cascia Hall School, Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1975 and 1976. He was sent for a third time to Austin Catholic High School, where he served as Principal from 1976 to 1978.

He was named Director of Tolentine Center, Olympia Fields, in 1978. Because of declining health, he only served for a short time in this position. He was assigned to Augustinian Midwest Priory, Villanova, Pennsylvania, in 1979, but returned to Tolentine Center after a short time there.

Father Dore experienced heart problems for many years. He had undergone open-heart surgery in 1970. Toward the end of his life, his heart condition worsened, causing his death on February 14, 1980.

Father Dore held many positions of responsibility and carried them out well and with great enthusiasm, in spite of his health difficulties. His love for student activities at Austin Catholic High School, especially for the musicals produced by the students there, has a special place.

He is buried in the Augustinian plot at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Alsip, Illinois.
