Human Rights Day: December 10, 365
Augustinians are encouraged to plan and implement prayer, awareness-raising and/or actions to promote the Christian values highlighted in the United Nations International Days recommended to Augustinians around the world.
While in Albania, Pope Francis said, ""Let no one consider themselves the 'armour' of God while planning and carrying out acts of violence and oppression." He has also spoken about Human Trafficking. He spoke to diplomats and said, "“Human trafficking is a crime against humanity. We must unite our efforts to free victims and stop this crime that’s become ever more aggressive, that threatens not just individuals, but the foundational values of society.”
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights
- Adopted by the UN General Assembly on 10 December 1948
- 5 October 1995, St. John Paul II called the Declaration "one of the highest expressions of the human conscience of our time"
Secretary-General's Message for 2014
On Human Rights Day we speak out. We denounce authorities who deny the rights of any person or group. We declare that human rights are for all of us, all the time. The United Nations protects human rights because that is our proud mission. Everyone can advance the struggle against injustice, intolerance and extremism. Let us respond to the cries of the exploited, and uphold the right to human dignity for all. Ban Ki-moon
