Augustinians Support UN World Food Day

Augustinians of the Midwest are encouraged to mark the United Nations' World Food Day, October 16, 2013, in their communities and ministries. The Augustinians invite and encourage all who identify with Augustinian spirituality and traditions to do likewise.

For I was hungry and you gave me food.
— Mt. 25:35

These words of Jesus enable us to understand the deep significance in God’s eyes of meeting the fundamental needs of every man and woman. Care for the hungry and needy is an essential part of the Christian message and of traditional Catholic moral teaching.

2013 Theme: Sustainable Food Systems for Food Security and Nutrition:  Healthy People Depend on Healthy Food Systems

With the Slogan "Healthy People Depend on Healthy Food Systems," World Food Day for 2013 focuses on the theme of Sustainable Food Systems for Food Security and Nutrition.

"Food systems are how our food is grown, processed, packaged, transported, stored, marketed, purchased and eaten," the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (F.A.O.) web site states.

Food systems are a necessity for human survival, but they can harm the environment, F.A.O. observed. For example, food systems can use much water, use a lot of energy and create greenhouse gases.

To make food systems more sustainable, improvements are needed in every part of the food system. "Even food shoppers will need to learn more about how their habits and choices can affect farmers and the environment," F.A.O. said.

"Each of us has the power to help change our food systems. By eating nutritious food and reducing the amount of waste we create, we can help make our food systems more sustainable," F.A.O. said.

World Food Day 2013 is an opportunity for learning, reflecting, praying, and acting against hunger. It is an occasion to learn more about what we can do to make our food system more healthy and sustainable -- reducing hunger and increasing food security while decreasing negative impacts on our environment.
