Rev. John F. Mahoney, O.S.A. entered eternal life on May 15, 1969.
John Francis Mahoney was born on June 27, 1899 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to John and Catherine (McElligott) Mahoney. He was baptized on July 16, 1899 at Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Philadelphia. He received the Sacrament of Confirmation on June 1, 1910 at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Philadelphia.
After beginning high school at St. Philomena Commercial School, Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, John entered the Augustinian Preparatory Scholasticate, Villanova, Pennsylvania, where he completed his secondary education. He was received into the Augustinian Novitiate on June 15, 1918. He professed simple (temporary) vows in the Order of St. Augustine on June 25, 1919 and solemn (permanent) vows on June 25, 1922.
John earned a B.A. in Philosophy from Villanova College, Villanova, in 1922. He then pursued theological studies at Villanova. He was ordained a priest on August 2, 1925. He did further studies at Catholic University of America, Washington, D. C.
Father Mahoney's assignments included Mother of Good Counsel Parish, Staten Island, New York; Augustinian Academy, Staten Island; St. Paul Parish, Mechanicsville, New York; St. Rita High School, Chicago; and St. Thomas High School, Rockford, Illinois.
He also served at St. Matthew Parish, Flint, Michigan; St. Monica Monastery, Oconomowoc, Wisconsin; and St. Augustine Seminary, Holland, Michigan.
Father Mahoney died in Oconomowoc on May 15, 1969 of a heart attack. He had been named Prior (local superior) of the Augustinian community there the previous August.
He is buried in the Augustinian plot at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Alsip, Illinois.
